What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL? A fundamental change occurred in my teaching and attitude of being an instructor while I attended OBE-SCI training. It made me to recall and review years of teaching and think how successful or unsuccessful I have been in my teaching. I noticed that to the large extent, my teaching has been conventional and teacher centered. How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department or faculty? What activities did you carry? (Please attach one or two photographs) glance At first place, I worked on my COs and shared it with both my colleagues and students. For this action, I had two reasons; first I wanted to indirectly draw my colleagues’ attention to working on their own Cos. The second reason was to engage my students in instruction and assessment process. Through these sort of activities, I wanted to construct alignment between my COs, instruction and assessment process. Moreover, in my classroom I practiced making both informal and formal groups although theoretically I was aware of strengthening and challenges of making groups in the classroom. For example, I knew that in groups there would be many free-riders—members who do not take active part in group activities. On the other hand, I noticed that there are many positive and informative points in making groups. I observed that how students respected the individual’s accountability and group interdependency while they are working as a team. Click here to download full Story. |

A Success Story of Kandahar UniversityFull Name: Khadem hussain Saeedi What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL? For the first time when I heard OBE- SCL, I remember that we started with a question that is what is OBE? And all the participants gave their ideas about OBE. The first figure of OBE which I saw was three main stages in teaching and learning process (instructors, students and assessment). It was quite interesting to me. Prof. Shahrin was giving the reason why we have to shift from the traditional methods which is considered to be input based methods compared to OBE which emphasize output and end results. I was too engrossed with this type of program though I heard about SCL when I student in faculty of education, but OBE was totally a new idea and concept for me. The three days’ workshop was a mindset for me which motivated me to reconsider current education system and find out what does the program I implement lack since along time I was regretting why my efforts and struggles do not give positive results. Once I heard about OBE, I attempted to find out how this system can be implemented in the ministry of higher education. Then, I went to adopt SCL. I found the beauty of this program in aligning activities with intended outcomes and to measure the success or not we went for assessment task. I can say that overall this program was interesting to me. The program had things which I since I was expecting since long time but I never knew about that. The beauty of this type of education was that teachers start with the clear picture of what is important for a student and what type of product we should supply to our demanders. We are selecting specification for our products. Because of all this, I recommend this to my colleagues and love OBE and SCL to be put in practice. Click here to download full Story. |

Please share one or two photographs showing practice of OBE-SCL in your classroom or faculty. Also attach your photograph so it can be attached with the success story. What was your first impression when you first time heard about Outcome Based Education and Student Centered Learning (OBE-SCL)? The first time I heard about OBE-SCL, it was in April 2015; my first impression was counting OBE-SCL just as a simple approach but may be updated comparing to natural, functional or communicative approaches in the field of learning and teaching. But later I found OBE as an educational theory that bases each part of educational system with reference to the outcomes, each learner is involved in learning process and is responsible to achieve targeted learning outcomes set up by the organization as well as the instructor. One of the most important things I learned from OBE-SCL workshops was to believe changing the existed Teacher-centered education to the new module of Student-centered education in Afghanistan’s universities and create an ideal learning environment for Afghan educators. A Success Story of Sheikh Zayed UniversityFull Name: Ahmad Javid Shakib What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL? Firstly, when I heard OBE –SCL, the concept make sense to me, but I had some concern regarding the implementations. When I started to implement them I faced with some resistance from faculty members and students, but after sometimes the concept were welcomed. Now every member of my faculty are trying to adopt OBE – SCL. How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department or faculty? What activities did you carry? (Please attach one or two photographs) In the previous semester, I work on the assessment part of OBE. In my early teaching period I had very shallow concept of assessments. I thought the purpose of the assessment is to decide the fate of the students either pass them after the final exam and promote them to upper class or fails them. However, later on after participated in the OBE –SCL workshop I came to know that in the higher education system the approach of assessments is much broader. Assessment is one of the three main stages of the Teaching and Learning process and its role in the continual Quality improvement (CQI) is very much important. In formative assessments I have used two methods: Firstly, during the teaching methods of Brainstorming , Focused Listing or Think – Pair Share I gave my students feedback I used encouraging sentences in the class such as: … so on so ‘s argument on the topic was logical and I thanked him/her, he/she really pay attention to lessons. The students who made mistakes during the above mentioned teaching methods I corrected the mistakes and explain the topic. Secondly, During the Jigsaw Method of teaching despite using encouraging sentences and giving feedback, I also distributed some pens and notebooks as gifts to the champion group whose performance were in higher quality. In both these assessments I haven’t marked them. Thus, they were formative assessments. For next semester I have plan to work on PO and CO of my class and bring improvement in it.
