What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL?

A fundamental change occurred in my teaching and attitude of being an instructor while I attended OBE-SCI training. It made me to recall and review years of teaching and think how successful or unsuccessful I have been in my teaching.  I noticed that to the large extent, my teaching has been conventional and teacher centered.

How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department or faculty? What activities did you carry? (Please attach one or two photographs) glance

At first place, I worked on my COs and shared it with both my colleagues and students. For this action,  I had two reasons; first I wanted to indirectly draw my colleagues’ attention to working on their own Cos. The second reason was to engage my students in instruction and assessment process. Through these sort of activities, I wanted to construct alignment between my COs, instruction and assessment process. Moreover, in my classroom I practiced making both informal and formal groups although theoretically I was aware of strengthening and challenges of making groups in the classroom. For example, I knew that in groups there would be many free-riders—members who do not take active part in group activities. On the other hand,  I noticed that there are many positive and informative points in making groups. I observed that how students respected the individual’s accountability and group interdependency while they are working as a team.

What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL?

When I heard about OBE-SCL for the first time, I thought it is a teaching method which may not have a broad area of application. I thought it might be information for individuals only. I could not think of it as important as I got about it latterly.

How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department or faculty? What activities did you carry?

After my return, I firstly transferred all the information to the lecturers of the department. After some time of study, they got familiar with its principals. The lecturers have been applying it in the classrooms. They have been asking students to participate in the lectures. They have also been giving students assignments to do them at home. After this program, students prepare presentation and they are participating in class work more than they used to do in past. Till then, we have completed the outcome on course basis. We have prepared our new course policies for OBE, and this has been done by some of the lecturers.

What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL?

When I heard about OBE-SCL for first time, I felt that the OBE-SCL can be a new window for entering a new world of learning and teaching, the world which has a different perspective towards education compared to traditional methods. It can help us to reduce and eliminate the existing gap between university professors’ perspective and students’ perspectives toward teaching and learning in my country. These new perspectives enable professors to convey what students need in an easier and more effective way. The new perspectives enable students to get equipped with the skills and knowledge in a more effective and efficient way and therefore, apply them in their professional lives after graduation.

How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department of faculty? What activities did you carry?

The skills and knowledge I learn from this workshop can obviously assist me to transfer the essential knowledge, skills, and perspective to my students. In general, it can positively influence the effectiveness and efficiency of my teaching process and teaching skills, which will affect the learning skills of my students at individual and community levels. After the completion of the training, I returned to Herat University with more incentives and continued my profession as a university lecturer and associate dean Management and Economics Faculty. I shared what I learnt with my colleagues in departments and applied all of them in implementing my courses. In the first steps, it was wired for students but after a while, the changes in teaching methods enhanced students’ interest and motivated them to get involved in the process. Their interests motivated them to be involved in individual assignments and group assignments. When I was applying the methods and skills I got from

What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL?

When I attended the first 3 days of Outcome Based Education and Student Centered Learning (OBE-SCL) workshop in the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) which was organized by Higher Education Development Program (HEDP), I thought that these are the things that I already know as a teacher. However, after attending the second and third training workshops and studying the reference materials and implementing what I learned in my classrooms, I understood the true value of OBE-SCL and became more interested.

How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department or faculty? What activities did you carry?

For implementation of OBE, I started from my classroom where I developed a course learning outcomes, course syllabus and lesson plan. Besides, I use SCL approaches (i.e. active learning, cooperative learning, problem based learning). Mostly,  I started from informal activities and used some of the activities to engage students in active learning and keep my classrooms active.

What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL?

For the first time when I heard OBE- SCL, I remember that we started with a question that is what is OBE? And all the participants gave their ideas about OBE. The first figure of OBE which I saw was three main stages in teaching and learning process (instructors, students and assessment). It was quite interesting to me. Prof. Shahrin was giving the reason why we have to shift from the traditional methods which is considered to be input based methods compared to OBE which emphasize output and end results. I was too engrossed with this type of program though I heard about SCL when I student in faculty of education, but OBE was totally a new idea and concept for me. The three days’ workshop was a mindset for me which motivated me to reconsider current education system and find out what does the program I implement lack since along time I was regretting why my efforts and struggles do not give positive  results.

Once I heard about OBE,   I attempted to find out how this system can be implemented in the ministry of higher education. Then, I went to adopt SCL. I found the beauty of this program in aligning activities with intended outcomes and to measure the success or not we went for assessment task. I can say that overall this program was interesting to me. The program had things which I since I was expecting since long time but I never knew about that. The beauty of this type of education was that teachers start with the clear picture of what is important for a student and what type of product we should supply to our demanders. We are selecting specification for our products. Because of all this, I recommend this to my colleagues and love OBE and SCL to be put in practice.

How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department or faculty? What activities did you carry? (Please attach one or two photographs)

For implementation OBE, I designed a lesson plan that has defined outcome for every topic and aligned to program outcome. All teaching and learning activities in class are aligned to reach the daily topic outcome.

How did you implement SCL in your classroom, department or faculty? What kind of activities did you carry or found beneficial? (Please attach one or two photographs)

As we know that SCL is an approach to OBE. Therefore, for implementation of OBE, SCL should be implemented. I used different informal activities in my class, but mostly I used think pair share and note checking which are demonstrated in the below pictures.

What was your first impression when you first time heard about Outcome Based Education and Student Centered Learning (OBE-SCL)?

The first time I heard about OBE-SCL, it was in April 2015; my first impression was counting OBE-SCL just as a simple approach but may be updated comparing to natural, functional or communicative approaches in the field of learning and teaching. But later I found OBE as an educational theory that bases each part of educational system with reference to the outcomes, each learner is involved in learning process and is responsible to achieve targeted learning outcomes set up by the organization as well as the instructor. One of the most important things I learned from OBE-SCL workshops was to believe changing the existed Teacher-centered education to the new module of Student-centered education in Afghanistan’s universities and create an ideal learning environment for Afghan educators.

What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL?

Firstly, when I heard OBE –SCL, the concept make sense to me, but I had some concern regarding the implementations. When I started to implement them I faced with some resistance from faculty members and students, but after sometimes the concept were welcomed. Now every member of my faculty are trying to adopt OBE – SCL.

How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department or faculty? What activities did you carry? (Please attach one or two photographs)

In the previous semester, I work on the assessment part of OBE. In my early teaching period I had very shallow concept of assessments. I thought the purpose of the assessment is to decide the fate of the students either pass them after the final exam and promote them to upper class or fails them. However, later on after participated in the OBE –SCL workshop I came to know that in the higher education system the approach of assessments is much broader.  Assessment is one of the three main stages of the Teaching and Learning process and its role in the continual Quality improvement (CQI) is very much important.

In formative assessments I have used two methods: Firstly, during the teaching methods of Brainstorming , Focused Listing or Think – Pair Share I gave my students feedback I used encouraging sentences in the class such as: … so on so ‘s argument on the topic was logical and I thanked  him/her, he/she really pay attention to lessons. The students who made mistakes during the above mentioned teaching methods I corrected the mistakes and explain the topic. Secondly, During the Jigsaw Method of teaching despite using encouraging sentences and giving feedback, I also distributed some pens and notebooks as gifts to the champion group whose performance were in higher quality.  In both these assessments I haven’t marked them. Thus, they were formative assessments. For next semester I have plan to work on PO and CO of my class and bring improvement in it.

What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL?

As it was a new and strange phenomenon for me, I thought it would be difficult and impossible to implement it in the class and it would also be difficult to agree other faculty members to start the implementation of OBE-SCL in their classes.

How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department or faculty? What activities did you carry? (Please attach one or two photographs)

I started the implementation of OBE right after taking Kabul workshop. I formed groups in my class. I presented workshops to my faculty members and they also arranged their classes according to OBE-SCL. I established course outcomes.

How did you implement SCL in your classroom, department or faculty? What kind of activities did you carry or found beneficial? (Please attach one or two photographs)

I formed groups in my class. I give the groups tasks and the group representatives present their work. I use different SCL techniques in my class. I presented SCL presentations to my faculty members and convinced them to have SCL in their classes. After having every class, I understand that the outcome is achieved.

What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL?

It was a good and positive impression in my teaching performance. I was teaching my courses related to SCL but my teaching methodology was not so efficient .Some time I had to follow TCL because my courses were not constructively aligned and well planned to the intended courses’ and program’s outcomes.  After taking participation in the workshops prepared by HEDP in Kabul, I have upgraded my SCL and got OBE knowledge. Additionally, the master training in OBE-SCL in UTM made me skillful OBE-SCL’s trainer.

How did you implement OBE in your classroom, department or faculty? What activities did you carry?

As I have participated in the OBE-SCL workshops prepared by HEDP in Kabul, according to the HEDP’s rules I had to provide training workshop to other teachers in my faculty. I have provided OBE workshop to them for two days.  The workshop covered the following contents:
