“Champions’ opinions on the OBE-SCL Workshops”

Mr. Muhammad Sharif Hasanzoy is a lecturer in English Department of Faculty of Education at Kunduz University. He is one of the OBE-SCL Champions and provides OBE-SCL Workshops to other teachers.

As soon as trainees got the big picture of the OBE, they acknowledged that teaching and learning must be implemented in the way like OBE demonstrates. Identifying learning outcomes, course outcomes, program outcomes and program educational outcomes were the most amazing part of the workshop. These were somehow new concepts for the participants and they worked on them practically as examples during the workshop. Furthermore, the SCL module was also enjoyable for the participants; because they learned about creating classroom activities to engage learners actively involved in the lesson.  During the workshop attendees worked on some of the informal cooperative learning activities. Participants of the workshop said, implementing the twenty informal activities in their classrooms paves the way to create student-centered learning. While SCL module was being played, most of the informal activities were practically done by the trainees.

Mr. Enayatullah Hamdard is an Assistant lecturer in Faculty of Veterinary Science at Kunduz University. He is one of the OBE-SCL Champions and provides OBE-SCL Workshops to other teachers.

  1. What was your general impression and perception from the OBE-SCL Workshop you conducted at your university?
  • My impression was very enthusiastic while I conduct OBE-SCL workshop in Kunduz University for relevant lecturers of said university, moreover as OBE-SCL teaching techniques are modern and advance, fortunately, it need improved teachers along with its crucial facilitated environment where each single hope could be fulfilled by the participants, shortly I can say while we would like to have outstanding product, the input of respective product should be identified and the input should be more qualitative in order to achieve a high-quality product, thus the perceptions are high but the input from universities and ministry of higher education is very low which affect the entire perceptions of the drivers. I am sure if the constraints are resolved the OBE-SCL will have a crucial impact on our university products and could bring more changes to our community and could contribute toward a brilliant future of the nation.

What was your first impression when you first time heard about OBE-SCL?

For the first time when I heard OBE- SCL, I remember that we started with a question that is what is OBE? And all the participants gave their ideas about OBE. The first figure of OBE which I saw was three main stages in teaching and learning process (instructors, students and assessment). It was quite interesting to me. Prof. Shahrin was giving the reason why we have to shift from the traditional methods which is considered to be input based methods compared to OBE which emphasize output and end results. I was too engrossed with this type of program though I heard about SCL when I student in faculty of education, but OBE was totally a new idea and concept for me. The three days’ workshop was a mindset for me which motivated me to reconsider current education system and find out what does the program I implement lack since along time I was regretting why my efforts and struggles do not give positive results. When I heard about OBE-SCL for first time, I felt that the OBE-SCL can be a new window for entering a new world of learning and teaching, the world which has a different perspective towards education compared to traditional methods. It can help us to reduce and eliminate the existing gap between university professors’ perspective and students’ perspectives toward teaching and learning in my country. These new perspectives enable professors to convey what students need in an easier and more effective way. The new perspectives enable students to get equipped with the skills and knowledge in a more effective and efficient way and therefore, apply them in their professional lives after graduation. (more…)
